Interview with Paul Mason
Last week Paul Mason, author of the novels Silence, Who did it? and Go Away, agreed to be interviewed by one of our journalists.
Lifestyle & Experience
I live in New York with my second wife and our three children. I wasn’t always a writer. When I left school I got a job in a library. In my free time I read murder novels, but one day I decided to write one. I was lucky because people liked it. I earned a lot of money so I left my job at the library and began to write all the time. I get up at 6 a.m., go to the gym for an hour, then go to my office. I buy breakfast on the way and eat it while I check my emails. After I’ve answered my emails I start writing. I can easily spend 9 or 10 hours writing.
Tastes
After work I have dinner with my family. Sometimes we go out to parties or to the theatre, but most evenings I prefer to relax at home and listen to jazz or read. My favourite author is Agatha Christie and at the moment I’m reading a book she wrote about her life. My cat usually sits next to me while I read, and the rest of the family like to watch TV.
Places
One of my favourite places is Maine on the east coast. We have a small house near the beach. It isn’t very far from Vermont, where we go skiing in the winter. In the summer, we usually go to Venice where my wife’s family live. It’s probably the most beautiful city I’ve ever seen. I stayed in Venice when I wrote my third book and that’s where I learned to speak Italian and to play the guitar. I hope to buy a house there one day. Then I’d like to retire and learn to paint

Then I’d like to retire and learn to paint.

Making the most of retirement
Harry
I was a news journalist until I was 60. I wanted to retire and have more time with my wife. Sadly, she died five years ago and now I’m alone in the house. Our son, Jamie, is a teacher in Morocco and last year I went there for a holiday. I travelled to lots of countries when I worked, but this was my first trip to North Africa. I really want to go back. I’d like to travel into the Sahara and take photographs of the people and animals that live there, but I need to learn a bit of Arabic first.
Annette
Nine months ago I retired from my job as a French teacher, sold my flat in London, and moved to a small village. It’s incredibly quiet after London, but my life is much busier now. I’m decorating my new house and I’m learning to drive – I never needed a car in London. I spend a lot of time in my garden, too. I enjoy working in it and I’m planning to grow vegetables next year and I also want to get some chickens. There are sometimes problems, but luckily, my neighbours are really friendly.
Megan
Yesterday was my last day at work and now I can do what I want. After forty years as a cook, I need to lose a few kilos, so I’m going to learn to play golf. I’m planning to do a computer course at the local college. It’s a good way to learn about computers and meet new people, and I’d like to make some new friends. I’d also like to get a new computer so I can chat with my grandchildren on the internet every day – they live in Dubai and I don’t see them very often

THE FILMS in The Lord of the Rings trilogy have had a big impact on New Zealand. The country has become ‘Middle Earth’ to many of the people who have seen the films. This comes as no surprise to the film director Peter Jackson, who is in fact a New Zealander. He chose his home country because he knew that the variety of different landscapes
an 4 dark day far made New Zealand the best place to shoot the films.
Jackson and his team looked over the whole country for the most beautiful and most appropriate areas. The rolling hills of Matamata became Hobbiton, the village where Bilbo Baggins lives, and the volcanic region of Mount Ruapehu transformed into the fiery Mount Doom, where Sauron first made the Ring. In total, the team used 150 different locations all over New Zealand and they spent 274 days filming.
Thirty of the locations Jackson used are National Parks or conservation sites so he needed to get special permission to film here. In some cases, a special team dug up the protected plants, and took them to special nurseries, where they lived until filmingf inished. Then the team took them back to the park and replanted them again. In Queenstown, Jackson used enormous red carpets to protect the plants in the battle scenes because there were up to 1,100 people on set every day.
The Lord of the Rings films have been so popular that the tourist industry in New Zealand has grown dramatically. Today, tour companies offer a wide range of tours to different locations of the film, including Hobbiton, Mount Doom, and Edoras.-
